Eco Hotel and SPA & Fitness centre Makrelov*** is the first private family hotel in the Rhodopes. Over the years it has become a favourite place for holidays, business and meetings with friends.

The first panoramic summer garden in Smolyan opens.

The first award
Ivan Makrelov is named best hotel manager in the Rhodope region.

The extension
The extension is completed with the help of the SAPARD programme. Today the hotel is a complete complex with all modern facilities.
Eco hotel
Energy class A
Makrelov is the first hotel in Smolyan built entirely with energy-efficient and energy-saving materials and systems. It holds an energy efficiency certificate of class A, which puts it among the pioneers in Bulgaria in using modern technologies to reduce energy consumption and protect the environment.

City two-star hotel of 2006
On 24.11.2006, at the Grand Hotel Sofia, the Bulgarian Hotel and Restaurant Association presented its annual awards for professional achievement in hotel keeping, restaurants and management. Hotel Complex Makrelov won the award “City two-star hotel of 2006” – a distinction the owners and the team accept warmly, as proof of the direction the hotel has taken for more than 13 years.
Authentic Bulgaria quality mark
On 01.11.2006, in the building of the National Academy of Art, the first awards of the Authentic Bulgaria quality mark were presented. Hotel Complex Makrelov received a bronze mark – an award for the places that keep the spirit and tradition of Bulgarian hospitality, professionalism and quality service.
Best manager in the Rhodope region, 1999
In 1999 the chairman of the Bulgarian Hotel and Restaurant Association, Mr Blagoy Ragin, together with the chairman of the Union of Rhodope Hoteliers and Restaurateurs, Mr Georgi Pamporov, gave Mr Ivan Makrelov – owner of Eco Hotel Makrelov – the award for the best hotel manager in the Rhodope region.
It is the hotel’s first award, and it set the way the hotel has grown since – always towards a better product and better quality for its guests.

EU co-financing
The extension under the SAPARD programme
The building of the hotel’s extension was finished in 2006; the project was carried out with the help of the SAPARD programme. A plaque on the hotel’s facade records the co-financing by the European Union.
